How to Freeze the Top Row or First Column of Your Spreadsheet

When working with large spreadsheets, it can be frustrating to constantly scroll up and down or left and right to find important headings. Luckily, Excel has a feature that allows you to freeze specific rows or columns in place, making it easy to keep track of your data even as the spreadsheet grows. In this article, we'll explore how to freeze the top row or first column of your spreadsheet using Excel 2016.

To begin, navigate to the 'View' tab and locate the 'Window' area at the far right side of the screen. Within this area, you should see a button labeled 'Freeze Panes.' Clicking on this button will give you three options: Freeze Panes (which toggles between freeze and unfreeze), Freeze Top Row, and Freeze First Column.

For this tutorial, we'll focus on freezing the top row or first column. To do so, select either the 'Freeze Top Row' or 'Freeze First Column' option from the dropdown menu. This will lock the selected row or column in place, preventing it from scrolling off the screen as you navigate your spreadsheet.
